Adidas unveils hideous jerseys for six flagship programs this March

From acid wash jeans, to rat tail haircuts, to Miami Vice-style suits, the 1980s produced a number of fashion trends that probably never need to make a comeback.

Unfortunately, Adidas is bringing one back anyway this March: Zubaz.

Adidas rolled out new garish Zubaz-print jerseys Thursday for six of its flagship college basketball programs to wear during conference tournaments and the NCAA tournament. Baylor, UCLA and Louisville will don http://goods-sporting.webs.com/ sleeved versions similar to what the Golden State Warriors wore in a game earlier this month, while Kansas, Notre Dame and Cincinnati will rock traditional sleeveless jerseys.

[Also: Penn State shocks No. 4 Michigan]

The most amazing feat Adidas accomplished with these jerseys is the sleeves aren’t the part drawing the most complaints. It’s the fact that some of the nation’s most recognizable programs will be wearing color schemes and prints straight out of the early years of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that has fans most furious.

In a press release revealing the jerseys, Adidas defended them, calling the unusual look „eye-catching“ and „groundbreaking.“

„The impact camo pattern is designed to let players stand out on college basketball’s biggest stage, while patches on the jersey backs feature school specific detailing to pay homage to team spirit and pride,“ the release reads.

If the purpose of the new jerseys is simply to draw attention, then this is the second year in a row Adidas has succeeded. Last year, Adidas also borrowed from the 1980s, putting Louisville, Baylor and Cincinnati in neon jerseys during the college basketball postseason.

Baylor’s neon green look and Louisville’s infrared gear were polarizing as well, but they were not immediately panned the way this year’s jerseys have been. This year’s looks range from not terrible cheap jerseys (Louisville), to pretty awful (Notre Dame), to an abomination (UCLA).

For schools, the purpose of adopting alternate jerseys like these is usually twofold.

First, it’s a money-making opportunity since it introduces a new product to sell. Secondly, it typically aids recruiting by letting prospects know that they’ll always be outfitted in the freshest, most up-to-date gear if they choose your school.

The question with these Adidas jerseys is whether they fulfill either purpose. Maybe the initial uproar will fade, but it’s hard to imagine recruits will be wowed by the new gear or fans will be lining up at sports jerseys campus stores and sporting goods shops to purchase it.

Athlon’s Essential 11 Links of the Day

Before BountyGate sent their season into chaos, the New Orleans Saints rightfully dreamed of being the first team to play a Super Bowl inside their home stadium. They were loaded with talent, one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL, and came within a whisker of advancing to the NFC championship game last year.

Now, under the weight of scandal and with their head coach sitting home, disgraced, the Saints are in a hole that is virtually insurmountable. Two games into the season they have two losses, and by now they are well aware of the daunting stats: Since the NFL expanded the playoffs to 16 teams in 1990, only 22 of the 184 teams that started 0-2 ended up qualifying for the postseason.

Sure, the Giants became Super Bowl champions after an 0-2 start as recently as 2007, but history is still working against Drew Brees and co cheap hockey jerseys online, cheap authentic hockey jerseys for sale.

The good news? They are by far the most equipped of the NFL’s six 0-2 teams to rebound from their disastrous start.

Here’s a look at the teams on the brink of disaster. And no, that’s not too strong of a word considering in that same span only three NFL teams made the playoffs after starting 0-3:

New Orleans Saints-The reason for the Saints‘ horrible start has been a defense that has been manhandled and startlingly off performances by quarterback Drew Brees cheap baseball jerseys. Here’s the reason to hope, though: Both Brees and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo know how to dig out of a hole. Brees is too good and has too many weapons for his problems to be a long trend. And Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator with that Giants team that went 0-2 (thanks mostly to his defense) and ended up as champs (thanks in large part to his defense). Add in arguably the greatest home-field advantage in the NFL and it would be crazy to count them out.

Chances for a rebound: Good, though with the Atlanta Falcons in the same division they should already be aiming for the wild card.

Cleveland Browns-Their entire hopes are resting on a 28-year-old rookie quarterback in Brandon Weeden and a rookie running back with injury issues in Trent Richardson. After Week 1, this looked like a program headed for disaster. But in Week 2, both of them looked terrific against Cincinnati. Richardson ran for 109 yards and Weeden threw for 322. The problem, though, is they still lost and chances are both rookies will have their struggles down the road.

Chances for a rebound: In a division with the Ravens, Steelers and Bengals? Forget it. But next year might finally look bright.

Jacksonville Jaguars-In the first half against the Houston Texans on Sunday, QB Blaine Gabbert had thrown for minus-4 yards and ended up with a total of 53. If that’s not reason to set off alarm bells, I don’t know what is. They have a clearly rusty Maurice Jones-Drew and a passing attack that fears nobody. They’ve earned their 0-2 start and it’s probably only going to get worse from here.

Chances for a rebound: Bad, unless Gabbert is better than expected and they have more weapons than most people think they have.

Tennessee Titans-Running back Chris Johnson is already furious after the Titans‘ anemic start-and his too. He has 21 yards on the season with just 19 carries, which is ridiculously bad. The good news, you’d think, is he can’t get any worse, right? Also, a lot of people think Jake Locker has shown some promise. Add in the fact that their early schedule was dangerous-vs. New England, at San Diego, and it’s possible they may have bottomed out.

Chances for a rebound: Good considering Johnson is still likely to push for 1,000 yards on the season. Also they share a division with the awful Jaguars and the rebuilding Indianapolis Colts.

Oakland Raiders-The fact that the Raiders have scored just 27 points in their first two games is shocking considering the amount of offensive weapons they have. They had such high hopes for Carson Palmer, who seemed to develop a great chemistry late last season with WR Darius Heyward-Bey. They haven’t been able to connect and RB Darren McFadden has just 54 yards in two games so far. He’s better than that and so are the Raiders. Their defense isn’t great, but they should be able to keep up in high-scoring games.

Chances for a rebound: These are the Raiders, so by now everyone is used to false hope. A turnaround is possible, but they better hurry before the Chargers and Broncos break away.

Kansas City Chiefs-It is absolutely startling that Romeo Crennel is coaching a team that can’t seem to play defense. The big problem with that is that Matt Cassel is an average quarterback with good weapons who isn’t equipped to keep coming back. Throw in an average rushing attack behind Jamaal Charles (and company) and it looks like the good feelings the Chiefs built up at the end of last season were nothing but a mirage.

Chances for a rebound: Well, they lost their first two games by 16 and 18 points and now they play at New Orleans, and then home vs. San Diego and Baltimore? They’ll be lucky if they’re not 0-5.

Lightning-Rangers Preview

An extra day off may have been much needed for the slumpingTampa Bay Lightning, who suddenly are struggling to find the backof the net.

Their current skid began with a loss eight days ago to the NewYork Rangers, who hope to have defenseman Dan Girardi back forSunday’s rematch at Madison Square Garden.

Tampa Bay (6-4-0) averaged 5.3 goals while winning six of itsfirst seven games, but has totaled five during a three-game losingstreak.

The Lightning put a season-low 19 shots on net in a 4-2 defeatat New Jersey on Thursday, as Steven Stamkos went without a goalfor the second straight game after scoring at least one in fivestraight.

„We don’t seem to capitalize on our chances and it has beenhurting us the last three games,“ coach Guy Boucher said.

Tampa Bay was scheduled to play in Boston on Saturday in whatwas supposed to be its third stop on a four-game road trip, but awinter storm caused treacherous travel and the game was postponed -giving Boucher’s club an extra day to figure out how to bust out ofits funk.

„We just needed to battle more,“ said Martin St. Louis, who hasan NHL-best 13 assists. „The last couple of games we spent too muchtime in our end zone and when we got on offense, we didn’t do avery good job of sustaining it.“

Tampa Bay was 6-1-1 in the previous eight meetings before NewYork’s 3-2 road victory Feb. 2, as Rick Nash and Carl Hagelinscored third-period goals for the Rangers after it was tied aftertwo.

Stamkos scored his second goal of the game with 41 secondsremaining.

The Rangers are coming off a 4-1 win over the Islanders onThursday, but coach John Tortorella said his team needs to pick upthe pace.

„I still think we need to play with more energy,“ Tortorellasaid. „We need more tempo in our game. We’ve got to continue toimprove.“

New York (5-5-0) has been outscored 26-24 and is in the bottomthird of the league in goals scored. It has converted only 4 of its37 power-play opportunities (10.8 percent), ranking among the worstin the NHL.

„We have to find a way to get points,“ Tortorella said. „Istill think there’s a lot of sloppiness with our game. There are alot of things that need to continue to improve.“

Rookie J.T. Miller provided all the offense necessary Thursday, netting two goals in his second NHL game. Marian Gaborik and RyanMcDonagh also scored cheap sports jerseys.

„We need everybody to do good stuff for us,“ said HenrikLundqvist, who made 27 saves. „(Miller) plays so mature out there, making good decisions with the puck. It definitely brings someenergy to the group NHL jerseys for sale. Guys come in and do well right away.“

Captain Ryan Callahan returned Thursday after missing theprevious three games with a dislocated shoulder, and the Rangerscould have Girardi back from a two-game absence due to a lower-bodyinjury.

„I just want to get back,“ Girardi said. „It would be nice toplay Sunday.“

Martin Biron made 30 saves versus the Lightning in the firstmeeting, though Lundqvist could get the start Sunday despite going1-2-4 with a 2.79 goals-against average in his last seven starts inthis series.

It’s unclear if Tampa will go with Mathieu Garon, who made 27saves in the first meeting, or Anders Lindback.

Boston Celtics squeak past Miami Heat in Game 4 OT thriller

The Boston Celtics won Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals 93-91 in overtime.

„Red wasn’t going to let that go in, you know,“ Rivers said of late Celtics icon Red Auerbach. „Not in the Boston Garden.“

You can believe that, or you can just believe the shot didn’t fall. But know this: This incarnation of the Celtics refuses to fade gently into the twilight http://goods-sporting.net/hockey-jerseys/. Where ever they are going-perhaps to the NBA Finals, perhaps not-it will be with a fight.

So it was that Game 4 devolved from an offensive exhibition to a physical struggle. Star forwards LeBron James of the Heat and Paul Pierce of the Celtics fouled out in overtime, and six others finished the game with four or five fouls.

The best-of-seven series is tied at 2-2, with the home team winning each game, as it has been in the Western Conference finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs cheap NBA jerseys.

The Celtics-Heat series has been reduced to a three-game series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Miami (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). Boston still faces an arduous task. It must win at least one on the road. Only 14 teams in NBA history have come back from a 2-1 deficit.

„We haven’t put together a 48-minute game yet,“ Boston forward Paul Pierce said. „We’re hoping we can put together a full game in when we get down to Miami.“

Facing pressure, Miami may be close to bringing back All-Star forward Chris Bosh. Bosh hasn’t played since straining his a muscle in his lower abdomen against the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals May 13, three weeks ago. ESPN reported Monday morning that Bosh will be activated for Game 5 and would play barring a setback.

Before Game 4, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said there was no update on Bosh, who has been listed as out indefinitely.

Sunday’s game will be known for wild swings: Boston had an 18-point lead that evaporated in the fourth quarter. It will be known for Rajon Rondo’s 10 first-half assists, and James‘ three-pointer with 37.5 seconds that sent the game into overtime.

It will be known for great offense and great defense, for bad offense and bad defense and for two important offensive rebounds by Boston’s Mickael Pietrus on the same possession, a scoreless Boston possession that took more than 60 seconds off the clock in overtime.

„An instant-classic type of game,“ Pierce said. „A good old class bar fight.“

It will also be known for the two leading scorers fouling out. Pierce, who had 23 points, picked up his sixth foul 38 seconds into overtime. James, who had 29 points, fouled out with 1:51 left.

James sat at his locker postgame flabbergasted. In 794 regular-season and playoff games, James has fouled just four times – three times with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His last before Sunday was April 2, 2008.

„I don’t foul out,“ James said. „If I’m going to foul out, that sixth foul, I wish I would have earned it, and it had actually been a foul on me. Whatever.“

On the play that sent James to bench, he tried to post up Pietrus near the basket. Pietrus fell to the ground and James fell on top of him. Referee Joey Crawford immediately called the foul on James.

„It’s very difficult because I know how to play the game of basketball, and I don’t need an advantage of holding somebody or pushing somebody down,“ James said in the locker room. „But whatever, we lost.“

Fifty-eight fouls were called, 12 of them on the offenses. It was not a pretty game. Boston dropped 61 points in the first half but 32 total in the second half and overtime. Miami shot 42.5%, Boston 41.2%.

„The play-calling was all over the place, as far as the refs,“ Celtics forward Kevin Garnett said.

Rondo gave another advanced-level seminar in point guard play. He carved up the Miami Heat’s defense with another brilliant performance, dominating the game by directing an impressive offensive game plan in the first half. He finished with 15 points and 15 assists.

Spoelstra changed his lineup for the fifth time, moving Joel Anthony into the starting lineup at center instead of Ronny Turiaf. The lineup favors defense, as Anthony is more athletic and versatile.

It had been a productive lineup during the postseason. Entering Game 4, the lineup of Anthony, James, Shane Battier, Wade and Mario Chalmers had outscored opponents by 35 points in 80 minutes during the playoffs.

Miami also rode forward Udonis Haslem’s hot hand. Haslem missed a tough shot at the end of regulation, but he finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds in 36 minutes.

„As the series is getting tougher, more physical, it’s not a coincidence that I’m increasing (Haslem’s) minutes. Same thing with Joel,“ Spoelstra said.

However, the new starting lineup didn’t matter. Rondo notarized the game early with his unique imprint in the first half. The Celtics jumped to a 21-6 lead with 5:17 left in the first quarter on 7-for-12 shooting on three-pointers.

The Heat have no answer for Rondo’s ability to create for himself and others, mostly others. He delivered precision passes to cutters near the basket, and when Miami’s defense collapsed on him, he found open shooters, many at the three-point line.

Six Celtics scored in double-figures: Pierce, Garnett (17), guard Ray Allen (16), Rondo (15), forward Brandon Bass (11) and guard Keyon Dooling (10).

But leads-even Boston’s early 34-23 edge-meant nothing. Boston led 61-43 late in the first half, and 65-49 early in the third quarter.

„Our execution in the first half was flawless,“ Rivers said. „It was as good as maybe we’ve had, and we completely got away from it.“

Miami’s defense gets credit for that. The Heat increased the defensive intensity as they made a push to get back in the game.

„You have to collectively be willing to get into the pit and get your hands dirty for however many minutes it may be,“ Spoelstra said. „Often times, it won’t necessarily be pretty. Both teams defend, both teams get after it and you have to find different ways to come out ahead.“

Wade again started slow but finished with 20 points, 12 coming after halftime. Miami cut Boston’s lead to 73-68 by the start of the fourth quarter and took the lead for the first time, 76-74, on guard Norris Cole’s layup.

However, it was the second consecutive game in which the Heat were down big early. They trailed by 24 in Game 3, which Boston won 101-91.

„We waited until the second half, which we can’t do,“ James said. „We can’t wait until we get down and then make a big push.“

Both teams had chances to win it in regulation and overtime. After James tied the game in regulation, Garnett was called for an offensive foul. Miami called a timeout and ran a play for James, but as he began his move to the basket, three Celtics defenders prevented James from getting into the lane. He passed to Haslem, who missed a shot at the buzzer.

Rondo outscored Miami 3-2 in overtime.

„Let’s lean on our defense,“ Rivers said of his overtime game plan.

It worked. Miami was 1-for-8 in the final five minutes.

„No one said this was going to be easy,“ Spoelstra said.

Tim Duncan re-signs with Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday that they had re-signed Duncan, bringing back the 36-year-old forward for at least a 16th season. Terms were not disclosed, though Yahoo Sports cited anonymous sources in reporting it was a three-year, $36 million deal.

The first overall pick in the 1997 draft, Duncan has led the Spurs to nine division titles and the playoffs every year, including four NBA championships, in 15 seasons. The Spurs are 830-352 in the regular season during his tenure, the highest winning percentage over any 15-year span in NBA history, and Duncan has two league MVP awards and three NBA Finals MVP honors.

„Tim Duncan has established himself as one of the best players in NBA history,“ coach Gregg Popovich said. „He is an unselfish superstar who loves to compete and has only one goal when he steps on the court-to do whatever it takes to help his team win. We are all thrilled that he’ll spend his entire career as a San Antonio Spur.“

Duncan, a 13-time All-Star, has averaged 20.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.22 blocks a game over his career.

He experienced a bit of a renaissance last season after injuries and age led some observers to speculate his career was nearing an end. Duncan averaged 15.4 points and 9.0 rebounds in leading the Spurs to the Southwest Division title and a league-best 50-16 record cheap authentic MLB jerseys.

„I think (his health) probably had as much to do with solidifying in his mind how long he wanted to go into the future,“ general manager R.C. Buford said NFL jerseys for sale. „He played well throughout this whole season and he even felt better than he ever had. I think in his mind that was what was important. We’re going to play him as long as he says he can play and then probably a couple of days longer. We’re hoping he’s going to extend us.“

The signing was expected, especially after Duncan told Yahoo Sports, „I’m here and I’m a Spur for life,“ during the team’s Western Conference playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

„You’re never confident that is going to happen until it’s done, but he made it clear he wanted to be here,“

Buford said. „We laid out what our realities were and here’s how we thought we could accomplish the best team we could put around him and he said, ‚I want to be a part of it.‘ „

To that end, the Spurs also announced restricted free agent Danny Green had re-signed with the team.

Buford said there was nothing to report about whether forward Boris Diaw re-signed or if 2009 second-round pick Nando De Colo would join the Spurs, because there are „logistics involved“ with signing international players. De Colo and Diaw are playing for France’s Olympic team along with Spurs point guard Tony Parker.

De Colo played the past three seasons with Valencia of the Spanish League.

With the possible exception of De Colo’s addition, the Spurs are expected to return virtually their entire roster from this season.

„I was going to announce that we traded for Steve Nash, but the Lakers beat us to it,“ Buford said. „I think we won’t go into the season with the exact same team as we had a year ago. (But) we think there is a lot of opportunity for internal growth, especially this summer when we have our gym and our players and the opportunity to get our coaches with them.“

But the Spurs have other questions this offseason. The Spurs lost in the playoffs to Oklahoma City, blowing a 2-0 lead. They don’t have many glaring needs, with the bulk of the roster on track to return.

Parker has apparently healed from a bizarre eye injury in time to play for France in the Summer Olympics. He got a shard of glass in his eye, damaging his cornea, during a New York City nightclub fight involving Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake’s entourage.

Parker, 30, has two years remaining on a $50 million contract. He is coming off averaging 18.3 points and a career-high 7.7 assists.

Manu Ginobili also will be in London to play for his native Argentina, a moonlighting stint that always makes the Spurs anxious because of the 34-year-old playmaker’s propensity for injury.

Second round worth the wait for some NFL draft prospects

Rueben Randle has a new appreciation for the word, with his long backstage wait at Radio City Music Hall on Friday night finally, mercifully, disrupted by the big phone call from the New York Giants.

The LSU receiver was the 63rd player chosen in the NFL draft, but as the last player left in the green room you can’t blame him if he felt a bit like Mr. Irrelevant.

„He had a lot of patience,“ said his father, Emmitt Randle.

The NFL invited 26 players (and their guests) to the Big Apple for the draft festivities. Most of the players were selected on Thursday, and by the time the second round began on Friday night, the first-rounders had taken private jets to their new NFL cities.

One of the invitees, Georgia tackle Cordy Glenn, didn’t bother to stick around on Friday after getting bypassed in Round 1. Glenn, chosen by the Buffalo Bills with the ninth pick of the second round (41st overall), bolted town Friday.

That left a Fab Five for Friday.

Then Coby Fleener, the tight end from Stanford, was picked by Indianapolis with the second pick of the night.

Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw left the room on the next pick, headed to Baltimore. Then Stephen Hill, claimed by the Jets in the 43rd slot.

When Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still was picked by the Bengals with the 53rd selection, Randle was left alone in the green room.

Well, not totally alone. He was surrounded by nearly a dozen family members, minus the four siblings who left town earlier on Friday.

„The main thing we did was try to keep him relaxed,“ said Emmitt, who owns a used-car dealership in Bastrop, La. „So we were in there just clowning around.“

That’s Emmitt, like Emmitt Smith?

„Yeah,“ he said. „And my wife is named Troy.“

Seriously?

„Yep.“

And your son winds up with the Giants?

„Now we’ve got to play the Cowboys twice a year.“

Emmitt had just finished watching the baby boy of his six kids handle his press conference with a mellow, low-key manner that the father sais is typical.

Randle, projected as a late first-round pick in several mock drafts, was the sixth receiver selected. If he was disappointed that he wound up as the final player picked in Round 2, he did not show it.

„There was not much I could do about it,“ he said. „It was out of my control.“

The kid surely has a good attitude about this.

„It’s going to be a great opportunity for me,“ he said.

Randle joins a perennial contender with a still-emerging, two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Eli Manning. He joins a receiving mix that includes Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. These factors, his father said, trump the draft slot.

„I told him before the draft began,“ Emmitt said, “ ‚It really doesn’t matter when you are picked. The main thing is that you wind up in a good situation.‘

„Our prayers were answered.“

The Randles weren’t the only ones seeking relief from a higher authority.

Upshaw, also pegged as a first-rounder in many mock drafts, said he prayed about 12 times.

Unlike Randle, Upshaw said he was frustrated when bypassed on Day 1-when the four Alabama teammates who were among the invited were taken.

„They all just told me to keep my head up, that my time was coming,“ he said basketball jerseys, the cheap authentic NBA jerseys supply for cheap with discount price.

The Ravens were originally slotted to pick 29th in the first round on Thursday night. When they traded down, moving to 35th, Upshaw saw it as his sign that he wouldn’t be a first-rounder. It was a huge disappointment authentic San Francisco 49ers jersey.

„That was my goal, to be a first-rounder,“ he said. „When they made the trade, that’s when the frustration set in.“

Yet Upshaw’s draft slot may ultimately prove to be only a minor annoyance. Upshaw joins a contender with a rich tradition for defense. He will play alongside All-Pros Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs and Haloti Ngata.

If that’s not enough of a formula for success, there’s the fresh chip on his shoulder.

„I want to prove everybody wrong who passed on me,“ he said. „I’m motivated.“

Shortly after Upshaw spoke, the clock struck 9 o’clock.

Randle was still in the green room.

But he later received his hero’s welcome from the home crowd, as the hundreds of Giants fans in the crowd roared their approval while Randle slapped palms with former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan and bear-hugged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on the stage.

In the end, it was worth the wait.

Button: Tallinder creates trouble for Kings

They are not suffering and they certainly have been devoid of misfortune. Has there been hardship? Definitely. The playoffs are always about the various hardships teams and individuals must confront and deal with in an effective manner. Winning a championship isn’t designed to be easy and it’s no different for the Kings or the New Jersey Devils.

In the Stanley Cup Final, there has been a significant change that has benefited the Devils and helped them move ahead of the hardship of falling behind by three games. This change has pushed the Kings to deal with a hardship that looked avoidable after winning the first three games.

MORE: Game 6 preview

The insertion of Henrik Tallinder into the Devils‘ lineup before Game 4 has had a significant influence on the complexion of this series authentic sports jerseys. Beyond the obvious of adding a player who has significant experience and is a good player, it has allowed the Devils to have better and more favorable matchups versus some of the big and physical forwards in the Kings‘ lineup. Without Tallinder, the Devils‘ defense pairings were:

Andy Greene-Mark Fayne

Bryce Salvador-Marek Zidlicky

About Craig Button

Craig Button started in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars and became director of player personnel, helping lead them to a Stanley Cup in 1999. He also served as vice president and GM of the Calgary Flames cheap authentic NHL jerseys, authentic NHL hockey jerseys for sale. He currently is an analyst with the NHL Network and TSN.

Anton Volchenkov-Peter Harrold

It looks like a straight exchange of Tallinder for Harrold but it has had a greater effect. With Zidlicky and Harrold on the right side of the Devils‘ defense, the Kings were able to take advantage of their size on the left wing by always knowing that at least one and at times two of Dustin Brown, Dustin Penner and Dwight King would have a decided physical advantage. It forced Zidlicky into situations where he had to do a little more heavy lifting and didn’t allow him to utilize his strengths to the fullest. Now with Tallinder in the lineup, the Devils‘ defense pairings are:

Andy Greene-Mark Fayne

Henrik Tallinder-Marek Zidlicky

Bryce Salvador-Anton Volchenkov

Adding Tallinder allowed the Devils to move Volchenkov to the right side and it has changed the look significantly for the three Kings forwards. Brown, Penner and King are now facing two big defenders in Volchenkov and Fayne and it allows Zidlicky to be in situations more suitable to his skill set.

During Game 5, Volchenkov neutralized Brown and made it very difficult for him to move around with any ease. That is the hardship Brown is now dealing with. It’s a hardship that Penner and King are dealing with as well. On the two Devils‘ goals in Game 4, by Patrik Elias and Adam Henrique, they were direct results of Salvador, Volchenkov and Fayne neutralizing the Kings‘ wingers and gaining an advantage. On the winning goal in Game 5, Volchenkov neutralized Brown.

A healthy Tallinder has helped the Devils gain an advantage by adding more weight and size on the blue line. It now is forcing the Kings to deal with a situation they didn’t have in the first three games.

Saying the Kings are dealing with adversity because of the two losses is fine. The reality is that the Kings must deal with the challenge of the Devils‘ improved defense. If they don’t find a successful way to overcome it in Game 6, the adversity becomes far greater.

Well, on Thursday at JetBlue Park, team president Larry Lucchino addressed what needs to be fixed this season, as the Red Sox continued spring training http://cheapteamjersey.net/nba-jerseys/ . And of course, coming off a 69-93 season, that list is long.

„“““It’s a slogan. But I think this one has the added virtue of being true and transparent,““““ Lucchino said. „“““That we know that last year and the final month of the preceding year were the beginning of a very downward trend for this franchise, a historic collapse, a disastrous 2012, that it was no secret that things needed to be repaired, reset, rebuilt, reloaded, reset, whatever ‚R‘ word you want to use, and that acknowledging it was probably an honest way to approach the season.““““

Lucchino spoke for about 30 minutes, as team executives continue a new spring approach to the media. In the past, Lucchino, principal owner John Henry, and chairman Tom Werner would traditionally speak as a trio. This year, the three are holding separate press conferences. Henry met the media Monday. Werner is scheduled for Friday.

Lucchino acknowledged that part of the franchise’s downfall was a deviation from its core philosophies, which Henry also admitted.

„“““It’s something that has been discussed for a little while now internally,““““ Lucchino said. „“““And so I’m not surprised that John has said it to you all as well. He feels pretty strongly that we deviated from our basic philosophy of grinding relentless at-bats deep in the count, on-base percentage, some of the fundamental things that got us the success we had. And we have fallen considerably. We used to have incentives in contracts relating to on-base percentage to show you how important we thought it was.

„“““So I think there was a kind of a deviation from that somewhere along the way.““““

But it’s not just on-base percentage that will be different in 2013. This off-season, the Red Sox added players who could improve the clubhouse culture from the toxic atmosphere that had permeated it since the September 2011 collapse. It’s early, but so far, camp has been a drama-free.

„“““That’s always important,““““ Lucchino said. „“““The side stories, the side shows, and the injuries are not directly related to the talent you have, but they can both be major factors in how successful you will be.““““

Of course, manager John Farrell, the team’s pitching coach in 2007-10, will further cultivate the culture change, both here and when the team gets back to Boston.

„“““I like a lot about him,““““ Lucchino said. „“““We spent some time together in the off-season and I remember him from his time here before, of course. He commands respect. He also has a skill set that’s particularly important to the success of this team.““““

Asked if there was one deal he regretted the team not making this off-season, Lucchino mentioned Cody Ross. The outfielder spent just one season with the Red Sox but seemed to adapt to the demanding marketplace seamlessly. Ross also had a near-perfect swing for Fenway Park, hitting .298 with 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, a .356 on-base percentage, and a .565 slugging percentage in 66 home games. But Boston let Ross slip away in free agency to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who gave him a three-year, $26 million contract.

The Red Sox will also see some changes off the field, as well. One is the vaunted home sellout streak which dates to May 15, 2003. Some have claimed the streak has been rigged. There were several games during the 2012 season when an official sellout was announced although scores of empty seats were visible throughout Fenway Park. Lucchino said he expects the 793-game streak to fall in April, possibly as early as the second game of the season-April 10 against the Orioles-and defended the streak’s length along the way.

„“““We didn’t gerrymander a new definition (of sellout),““““ he said. „“““We took the definition that was in place and had been in place 10, 20 years before us and was commonplace among many clubs in baseball.““““

Call it what you will, it’s likely to end soon.

„“““It’s going to rest in peace. That’s not such a terrible thing,““““ he said. „“““It’s an extraordinary accomplishment.““““

Lucchino and the Red Sox hope for some of those on the field this season, too.
